This piece, my "She/CEO/Owl," is part of a series called, "Truth is Textured." The series explores (feminine) power, while satirizing popular ideas of what is considered "feminine" and "masculine." This owl is the CEO of a billion-dollar company, and she is sick of your mansplaining. 

As art is still a field dominated by men, feminine art subjects are rarely seen through "the female gaze." I propose that this sort of perspective must involve both satire and a grounding in tactile reality. If all bodies are beautiful in some way, then all bodies are also strange, are also absurd. All bodies have hair in weird places, soft tissue sagging somewhere...and maybe even feathers.

This 11x17" watercolor of the Southern Alps in New Zealand is every hiker's dream. The aerial view explores the varied textures of the scene: the finger-like ridges of the mountains, the landscape beneath the surface of the lake, the mountain summits disappearing into the clouds. It's rustic. It's exciting. And the blues are simply captivating.

Be transported to Portofino, Italy: a dreamy seaside town with a ton of history.

I could paint the ocean all day. The varying clarity and depth of the water, the landscapes that lie beneath the surface, and the waves combine to create intricate textures. Brick is also a favorite subject of mine. Here, we see brick in varying states of wear, with chipping paint, water erosion, and the overall patina of passing time.

HE/BEAR/TITAN

This bear has eaten the bull, so you better watch your cash flow! A commentary on masculinity and economic principles, this surrealist painting is dripping with attitude. Rawr.

This 15x11" painting shows the power of a woman's voice in a man's world. In this post-apocalyptic cityscape, the witch reigns supreme. Her eyebrows and hair look real enough to touch. Watch out, this woman’s on fire—or setting one.

I love playing with vanishing perspectives. Here, we're looking up at a dragon's blood tree in Socotra, a Yemeni archipelago that's supposed to be "the most alien-looking place on Earth."

This adorable red panda just can't help licking his nose. Red pandas: cute zoo animal, or the cutest zoo animal? I'm going with the latter. The 31x41cm (12x16") original painting shows all the beautiful textures of the panda's fur and his scrunched-up little eyes. Looking at this guy makes me warm inside.

This 11x15" painting shows a wistful mermaid princess, with purple waves crashing in the background and a coral city sparkling in the distance. She has an elaborate crown, and she's the one who brings all the color to the party; the sea seems monochromatic without her. 

This is one of the first works that sparked my fascination with water.

In this series of illustrations, I combine techniques to bring you into a homey, rustic, sweet world. It's a warm spring day and the birds and the bees are out to play. You can easily imagine the rest of the scene: the tall, golden reeds beyond the fence, and the other purple, pink, and blue asters lining the rustic wood.

The collaged leaves, bee, and flower are made using coloured pencil and ink, giving them a unique, high-definition feel. The background is made using watercolour, pulling the work together with muted, peaceful colours.

As the snow was falling in London, I became hyperaware of its effects on the texture of the landscape. How it transformed the trees and stuck in animals' fur. This cute little fox painting is an exploration of those textures. And isn't he handsome?

These pink sands look delicious enough to eat. The wind-swept peaks disappearing in the distance also tickle my fancy; is this the real world, or is it just fantasy? The rock formations are also etched by the wind into intricate patterns. You could easily stick your fingers in these rocks and start climbing.

This work shows a swimming hole barely touched by human intervention. Dive in; the water’s fine! The textures of the moss, the sandy shore, and the lush leaves are enticing, too. The Beach, a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was shot near this location in the Philippines.

This illustration combines techniques to transport you to a world of warmth, sweetness, and peace. It's a breezy summer day and you stop to smell the flowers. The rest of the world fades away into a sweep of calming colours.

Vying for my utmost affection at the zoo is the ring-tailed lemur. These guys have personality for days; this lemur, in particular, is absolutely #notimpressed by me. Or anything else, it seems.

The painting is really a study in the texture of fur. How I can use various techniques to create a viscerally fuzzy feel.

"I am just a tiny fox / from a fennec family!" Okay, you don't have to be a Queen fan to love this little guy. Fennec foxes are often extra fluffy, white or beige in colour, and, most importantly, so tiny they can fit in the palm of your hand. 

This itty bitty fox also harkens back to my “gateway medium”: pen and ink.

I first fell in love with art due to the unique ability of ink dots (i.e., stippling) and strokes (e.g., cross-hatching) to create very fine textures, highlights, and shadows. I still find the high-contrast nature of black-and-white work very aesthetically appealing.

This original ink work is a new take on a tale as old as time: Adam and Eve. Here, Eve is pictured with a forked tongue ready to snatch the apple from the tree of knowledge...but the tree is already a part of her. Literally. It's growing out of her head!
